The Department of Environmental Health Engineering (EHE) applies science and engineering principles to enhance the environment—air, water, and land resources—ensuring they are safe for humans and other organisms. This discipline aims to provide professional education, equipping students with comprehensive knowledge in environmental science and engineering so they can work as environmental health professionals dedicated to improving environmental performance and sustainability.
Our mission is to train students to the highest scientific and practical standards, advance knowledge through research and development, and offer services to society, the nation, and environmental health experts. We strive to achieve a distinguished international standing in the northwest of Iran and among Middle Eastern countries by producing specialized knowledge for optimal environmental management and reducing health and environmental risks.
The Department of Environmental Health Engineering offers programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD levels. The Environmental Health course was first introduced in East Azerbaijan province in 1973 at the School of Environmental Health. In 1987, it was restructured into an associate degree program at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. In 1995, the bachelor’s degree program was launched to train individuals capable of specialized study and research in the field. The undergraduate program was fully established in 2008 and the department has been admitting students to the postgraduate program in Environmental Health Engineering since 2010. In 2016, we began offering a PhD program, providing advanced training to better understand the impact of the environment on human health and disease. PhD students receive comprehensive education in core areas such as epidemiological and community-based research methods, statistical analysis, risk assessment, biological mechanisms of susceptibility and disease, environmental modeling, and toxicology.
We warmly welcome international scientists and students to join our programs and contribute to our mission of advancing environmental health engineering.
Our mission is:
- Investigating the adverse health effects of the environmental exposure.
- Identifying high impact health research that changes practice, changes policy, and changes lives.
- Promoting the public health through learning, discovery, and communication.
- Administrating continuing education courses to help leaders and policy makers address critical challenges in public health and environment.
- Working with stakeholders inside the health system and innovators from the private sector.

Laboratories
Within the Department of Environmental Health Engineering in a prestigious university, called Tabriz University of Medical Sciences (TBZMED), where laboratories serve as bastions of scientific inquiry and environmental elucidation. Spanning a comprehensive array of sections, our laboratories include:
- Environmental Chemistry Laboratory: A center of chemical exploration, facilitating the isolation, identification, and quantification of organic and inorganic compounds. Here, precise measurements of chemical elements and qualitative analyses of diverse materials unfold with high accuracy.
- Microbiology Laboratory: Delving into the microscopic realm, this laboratory serves as a crucible for the isolation, identification, and examination of microorganisms. Through gene expression analysis and microbial scrutiny, we unravel the intricate dynamics of microbial ecosystems. as a matter of fact, Under the tutelage of our erudite faculty, students navigate the labyrinthine corridors of microbial inquiry, pioneering advancements in environmental science.
- Air Pollution Laboratory: At the forefront of atmospheric research, this laboratory conducts meticulous assessments of air quality. From monitoring microplastics to measuring the mass concentration of suspended particles such as TSP, PM10, and PM2.5, our endeavors safeguard environmental health with unparalleled precision.
- Advanced Analysis Laboratory: Here, cutting-edge instrumentation converges with high analytical prowess to deliver quantitative insights into volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals levels.
- Hydraulic Laboratory: Investigating the fluid dynamics of water is pioneered advancements in hydraulic engineering. Through innovative methodologies, we gauge the instantaneous concentration of suspended particles across varying sizes, fostering sustainable water resource management practices.
Across these laboratories, a comprehensive suite of services is offered, ranging from fundamental chemical analyses to intricate microbial examinations. Therefore, join us in our quest to unlock the secrets of the natural world and create a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
