Department of Occupational Health

The Department of Occupational Health began its activities by offering undergraduate courses in 2009. The mission of the department is scientific and practical participation in providing, maintaining and promoting the health of the workforce nationwide. Currently, the department is offering 3 fields; Occupational Health Engineering (undergraduate and postgraduate), Ergonomics (postgraduate and PhD) and Health, Safety & Environment Engineering (postgraduate). The latter’s classes are held jointly with the department of Environmental Health Engineering.

All members of the department believe that through teamwork, mutual respect and effective friendship with each other and students, by avoiding any discrimination in educational, research and administrative activities, they will make their best effort to participate and cooperate in achieving the goals of the department.

In 2025, Occupational Health Engineering Department should be a qualified, talented and scientific-educational body training expert manpower through postgraduate and PhD programs in Professional Health Engineering and related sub
disciplines.

Introducing the department

Department of Occupational Health and safety Engineering was established in 2009, with offering BSc in Occupational Health. The mission of this department is effective contribution to the provision and promotion of labor work force (both in local and national levels) and the development of occupational health science in national and international levels through training of qualified graduates. This department also offers training and research services to the organizations and industries. This department currently offers three courses including MSc of Occupational Health, MSc of Ergonomics, and PhD of Ergonomics as well as a joint course of MSc of HSE.

Organizational values

Members of this department try their best to educate students and promote the department by teamwork, mutual respect and effective relationships with each other and with students as well as by avoiding any discrimination and observing the department rules.

Perspectives

Laboratories of the occupational health and safety engineering department:
The occupational health and safety engineering department has physical (e.g., acoustic laboratories), chemical (e.g., industrial toxicology, industrial ventilation, etc.), workplace safety and ergonomics laboratories (cognitive ergonomics, anthropometry, biomechanics and work physiology laboratories), which provide both educational and commercial services.
Services provided by the occupational health and safety engineering laboratories:
1) Specialized services at the national and regional level,
2) Providing required services to the society in line with the comprehensive national health policies,
3) Monitoring, evaluating and issuing licenses and certificates in different fields of occupational health and ergonomics
The Occupational Health Engineering laboratories:

1) Physical agent’s laboratory:
In this laboratory, most of the activities related to the measurement of harmful physical factors in the work environment, such as sound, heat, cold, vibration, lighting, rays, pressure, etc., are carried out using standard and modern methods approved by reputable national and international organizations.
Equipment in this laboratory include sound level meter, dosimeter, radiation meter, photometer, luminance meter, vibration meter, etc.

2) Chemical agents, industrial ventilation and toxicology laboratories:
In this laboratory, sampling and measurement of various pollutants in the air are done using standard and modern methods approved by national and international organizations.
Some of the equipment in this laboratory include air sampling pumps, wet and dry gas meters, anemometers, manometers, wind tunnel system, four gas measuring devices, phase contrast microscope, etc.

3) Workplace safety laboratory:
This laboratory provides services with the aim of introducing various types of safety equipment and personal protective equipment and how to use this equipment correctly.
Some of the equipment of the workplace safety laboratory include different types of protective breathing masks, protective ear muffs and ear plugs, protective gloves, protective glasses, safety shoes, escape pods, fire safety equipment, fire alarm and extinguishing equipment, safety equipment for working at height, work clothes for special jobs, etc.

4) Acoustic laboratory:
This laboratory is used in cases where a completely quiet space without reflective surfaces is needed, as well as to improve the research capacity of researchers and create a platform for basic and applied research.
Some of the equipment of the acoustic laboratory include audiometer, test mannequin for protective headphones, acoustic chamber

5) Cognitive ergonomics laboratory:
This laboratory is used for the purpose of performing various cognitive tests and checking people's functions and cognitive defects such as attention, understanding, working memory, etc.
Some equipment of the cognitive ergonomics laboratory include Vienna test system, cognitive test soft wares, neurofeedback and biofeedback system, flicker fusion

6) Anthropometry, biomechanics and work physiology laboratory:
In this laboratory, most of the activities are related to measuring the anthropometric dimensions of the human body, muscle strength evaluation, and determination of physical work capacity.
Equipment in this laboratory include static and dynamic balance meter devices, tensile and compressive dynamometers, electro-goniometers, dynamometers, anthropometric chambers.
